Celebrate the Opening of the Hightower Photography Collections
Through the Lens of the Father (Frank Russell)
& The Son (Frank Floyd)
This is a celebration of Manchester Native, Frank Floyd Hightower. Frank and his father (Frank Russell Hightower) were prolific photographers who capture everyday events and studio images of several generations of Pittsburghers. At one time the official photographer for Oliver High and its yearbook, the Omicron, the Father and Son team have documented countless Northsiders.
The photos of Pittsburgh-born Frank Russell document the activities of community organizations like the Urban League, the Pittsburgh chapter of the NAACP, the Catholic Diocese, and several local churches as well as professional portraits and weddings of the African American community from the 1940s through 1990s. His son, Frank Floyd, followed in his footsteps to also become a professional photographer as well as a playwright and artist. His photos from the 1960s to the present document Black Theater in Pittsburgh, including the work of August Wilson, Rob Penny, Bob Johnson, Maisha Baton and Hightower himself. Community activities such as Black arts festivals and meetings held by community organizations like the Manchester Citizen’s Corporation are also documented. Like his father, Frank worked as a professional portrait and wedding photographer too. As a whole, these collections provide a remarkable visual representation of the African American community in Pittsburgh over eight decades.

Manchester Historic Society was founded in 1996 to help preserve and promote the history of Manchester.
Manchester is located just minutes from downtown Pittsburgh and offers the advantages of community living in the midst of the larger urban experience. We’re minutes from the North Shore, major sports and cultural attractions, the casino and the Federal Street renewal. We’re easily accessible from all parts of the region. Located along the east bank of the Ohio River, Manchester is roughly bounded to the north by the Conrail Railroad, to the west by Chateau Street, to the east by Allegheny Avenue and to the south by Western Avenue.

Community advantages
Manchester is one of Pittsburgh's 90 distinct neighborhoods located on the western side of the lower Northside.
The Manchester neighborhood has 3,000 residents that call it home. We have residents that have lived here all their lives and ones that have recently moved in for the charm of the neighborhood and the convenience of living close to the city.
Manchester is an amazing fusion of old and new... homes that have been handed down through generations, preservations that can take you back in time to the turn of the century, and new and modern interpretations of classic styles.
You will find a neighborhood with wide, flat streets and sidewalks and easy access to all of the city's major attractions like theaters, stadiums, and restuarants.
We are Pittsburgh's largest historic district. It encompasses 51.6 acres and over 600 buildings.
Please feel free to join the Manchester Historic Society, and help out in our cause.
