In Honor of Rev. James “Jimmy Joe” Robinson
MHS Members:
Many of you may already know, but one of Manchester's most important citizens passed away this week, Reverend James "Jimmy Joe" Robinson. Reverend Robinson was not only the founder of Manchester Youth Development Center and MACS School but the voice of Peace, Justice and Education. He was an athlete, a Minister, a Civil Rights Leader and a true community leader.
He was the first Black Football Player at the University of Pittsburgh. He marched with Martin Luther King in Selma and came to Manchester to do his best to build a peaceful community, and he carried that mission throughout his life. He was a friend to Manchester Historic Society and a supporter and true friend to me and many of our members.
He was one of the founders of Manchester Citizens Corporation (MCC) and until very recently had taken an active part as a mentor and active member of the team there. I've attached a statement from MCC that gives you more information. He will truly be missed.
Thank you,
Linda Hansen

Tour Highlights
The Piatt Companies are sponsoring jazz groups at three of the tour stops, curated by MCG Jazz. Legend and longtime Manchester resident Etta Cox will perform with each of the jazz groups throughout the afternoon.
Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is also providing their Guild On The Go van, which will be at the tour check-in in the 1200 block of Liverpool. Guild On The Go is a mobile art-making studio featuring a full array of MCG Youth arts-based programming. The van carries state-of-the-art video/photo equipment, sewing machines, a laser engraver, a wood-firing kiln and more. Mentors will be on hand to help neighborhood kids have fun and perhaps find a passion. The Guild On The Go Van is free to all Manchester residents and tour-goers thanks to the Piatt Companies.
A portion of the proceeds from this tour will support the Iota Phi Foundation and their HBCU Tour and College Mentoring Program.

Since 1996, Manchester Historic Society has been encouraging the retention and restoration of the housing stock in Manchester. One of Pittsburgh’s earliest and most important neighborhoods, Manchester went through a period of urban decay in the 1970s even as it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and designated a City Historic District in 1979.
Don't miss this opportunity to experience one of Pittsburgh’s hidden gems—where history, elegance, and community come to life!
Jazz Music Brought To You By MCG Jazz
Since 1987, Manchester Craftsman Guild (MCG) Jazz has presented almost 2,000 concerts and offered one of the longest running and most prestigious jazz subscription series in America. Through performances, education and production in their music hall and studios in the Chateau neighborhood, MCG Jazz has become one of the cultural backbones of the Pittsburgh region.
This year for the first time, Manchester Historic Society and MCG Jazz have partnered to make the Annual Showcase Manchester, Home and Garden Tour a truly swinging event. On Sunday, August 3, three hand-chosen jazz groups will perform at three different homes along the Home and Garden Tour route. In addition to entering homes that have been restored to their early 20th Century elegance—when Manchester and Allegheny City had more millionaires per capita than anywhere in the world—tour-goers will be treated to America’s original musical art form played by stellar jazz musicians from across Pittsburgh. Seating will be provided at each musical stop so that tour-goers can enjoy the music, homes and gardens.
Manchester Historic Society
Manchester Historic Society was founded in 1996 to help preserve and promote the history of Manchester.
Manchester is located just minutes from downtown Pittsburgh and offers the advantages of community living in the midst of the larger urban experience. We’re minutes from the North Shore, major sports and cultural attractions, the casino and the Federal Street renewal. We’re easily accessible from all parts of the region. Located along the east bank of the Ohio River, Manchester is roughly bounded to the north by the Conrail Railroad, to the west by Chateau Street, to the east by Allegheny Avenue and to the south by Western Avenue.

Community advantages
Manchester is one of Pittsburgh's 90 distinct neighborhoods located on the western side of the lower Northside.
The Manchester neighborhood has 3,000 residents that call it home. We have residents that have lived here all their lives and ones that have recently moved in for the charm of the neighborhood and the convenience of living close to the city.
Manchester is an amazing fusion of old and new... homes that have been handed down through generations, preservations that can take you back in time to the turn of the century, and new and modern interpretations of classic styles.
You will find a neighborhood with wide, flat streets and sidewalks and easy access to all of the city's major attractions like theaters, stadiums, and restuarants.
We are Pittsburgh's largest historic district. It encompasses 51.6 acres and over 600 buildings.
Please feel free to join the Manchester Historic Society, and help out in our cause.
